What To Do If You Lose Your Dog
Every dog should have a collar and tag with up to date details. If it is found by a member of the public, they will often contact the owner directly, which means their dog will be returned quickly, and as the council has not been involved there will be no charges. If a dog warden finds your dog straying they will seize the dog. It may be returned to you on the first occasion, free of charge, provided that it can be easily identified, they are able to contact you and can take your dog back straight away. Having your dog microchipped and keeping the details up to date helps in this process even if the dog's collar has come off.
If your dog is found straying in Gateshead, Sunderland or South Shields and the dog warden cannot return it to you, it will be taken to Cleadon Kennels, Cleadon Lane, Cleadon, Sunderland, SR6 7UY. Tel: 0191 5292369. You can call Monday to Saturday 9am - 6pm and 9am - 12noon Sundays.
Please report missing to the council dog warden straight away
You should also contact your local veterinary surgery in case your dog has been injured.
It is also a good idea to put up posters in the area around where your dog went missing. Ask local shops if they would be willing to post them in their windows. If you register on www.doglost.co.uk you can print posters off from there
